The decision is rarely straightforward. We break down the trade-offs across five key dimensions.
When clients come to us for the first time, this is almost always the first question they ask: "Should we go custom or modular?" The honest answer is that both are excellent options — for different situations. In 2026, with exhibition budgets under more scrutiny than ever, making the right call on day one has never mattered more.
Here is how we think about it across five dimensions that actually matter.
Custom wins. A fully bespoke stand is designed from zero around your brand — the geometry, the materials, the lighting, the furniture, all of it. Nothing is constrained by a system's existing components. If your goal is to be the most visually distinctive stand in the hall, custom is the path.
That said, modern modular systems have closed the gap significantly. A well-configured modular stand with high-quality graphics, architectural lighting, and branded furniture can look indistinguishable from a custom build to most visitors.
It depends on how many shows you do. Custom stands have a higher upfront cost but can be more economical over a multi-year exhibition programme if the same stand is used repeatedly. A common mistake: buying a custom stand for a single show and then storing it for two years. If that describes your situation, modular will almost certainly serve you better.
Modular wins clearly. If you exhibit at shows with different floor space allocations — say 36 sqm at one show and 72 sqm at another — a modular system adapts. A custom stand built for 72 sqm cannot be used at 36 sqm without significant rework.
Modular is faster to deploy. Custom stand fabrication typically requires 3–4 weeks after design approval. A modular system can often be configured and shipped in less time — important if a new show gets added to your calendar at short notice.
Custom wins for brands where the stand is a product. If you are a luxury brand, a premium technology company, or a business where the physical environment communicates your positioning directly — custom is worth the investment. For most B2B exhibitors, a well-executed modular stand with strong graphics and good lighting will outperform an average custom build every time.
For first-time exhibitors or companies with variable show schedules: start with a premium modular system. For established exhibitors with a fixed annual show calendar and a clear brand positioning: invest in custom.
"The best stand is the one built around the clearest understanding of your audience, your goals, and how many shows a year you actually exhibit at."
